The trip to Caranavi begins in La Paz, the capital city of Bolivia. An infamous 76 kilometer stretch of road connects the two cities. This route, notorious for its steep drop-offs and tight turns, is known locally as Death Road. Buena Vista is the name of the mill located just outside of Caranavi. Local coffee farmers, typically families with small 1-2 acre farms, bring their harvests to the Buena Vista and are paid on the spot. From there, quality control experts and agronomists roast, cup and sort the coffees according to strict consistency parameters. The coffee is, therefore, a combination of the various varietals grown by the collaborative effort of farmers in the wider Caranavi region.
